How To Hit Amazing Forehand
Jeff Salzenstein, Former top 100 ATP Player and USTA High-Performance Coach, delivers an in depth breakdown on the forehand, and explains how you can start hitting amazing angles with it. In this lesson, Jeff analyzes the following forehand and footwork areas:
1. Split Step
The near side player does a really great job on the split step. He’s off the ground when his opponent is making contact with the ball. He can improve his first move after the split by taking a bigger step, which will allow him to get to the ball faster. He could use a run through footwork pattern to deal with this wide shot. This small adjustment will help him to move more efficiently around the court, especially when playing at a higher level and dealing with fast balls.
2. Technique
He has a good first move and keeps his off arm across the body. He also creates great spacing with the ball before contact. Jeff would recommend him to finish his forehand with the off arm down by the pocket, or catch the racquet while keeping a wider base. This will help with his overall balance and consistency. Finally, he plays the ball to a safe target and with great margin from the sideline.
To summarize, Jeff recommends focusing on:
1. Taking bigger steps after coming from the split step
2. Hitting this running forehand in an open stance, and using your outside leg
3. Making a great first move with your off arm across the body, which creates proper spacing between you and the ball
4. Squaring up in a wide base after finishing the shot
5. Clearing your off arm out of the way of your body, and have it towards your pocket
6. Aiming to a safe target
