CircuitStack: Going Vertical with PCBs!

In this video I talk about my newest project, the CircuitStack Illuminator Protoype. The CircuitStack, as the name alludes to, is a set of PCBs that are stacked on top of eachother. They use the Pad2Via technology to attach multiple boards together with solder.

This prototype was designed for PCBWay, as they are the sponsor of these PCBs. I was able to design all of them such that they would qualify for the prototype pricing, which is 10 boards for only 5$. Most PCBs will fall under this category by default, as long as they are only 2 layers, and are kept under 100x100mm. The turn-around time for most prototype boards like this is only 24 hours too, which is pretty impressive!

The CircuitStack Illuminator consists of a total of 4 different PCBs, which I have called layers.

Layer 1, or L1, is the base PCB that has all of the components soldered to it. It only has parts on the topside to keep the bottom flat.

L2 attaches to L1 with Pad2Vias, which I have demonstrated in another video. L2 has cutouts for all of the parts on L1 so they can fit snugly together. I also routed a few traces on this layer.

L3 attaches to L4 with Pad2Vias. It only has a cutout in it for the PCBWay logo, but it does have some bare metal spots to help sink heat away from the ICs with the use of gap pads, since they are in an enclosed space.

L4 is the top layer. They have a cutout in the soldermask and copper layers in the shape of the PCBWay logo in order to let the light from the LEDs shine through.
