The Consort of Musicke
Barbara Strozzi (1617-after 1664) was a distinguished Venetian composer and singer, celebrated as the "virtuosissima cantatrice" (most virtuosic singer). She was the adoptive daughter of the poet Giulio Strozzi, who is believed by some to have been her biological father.
Strozzi's public career was remarkable for being based solely on the publication of her works, a novel approach at the time. Between 1644 and 1664, she published eight volumes of music in Venice, containing over a hundred pieces, mostly vocal works for solo voice and continuo. Among these is one ensemble collection, Il primo libro de madrigali, Op. 1 (1644).
