We captured this series of videos from one of our nest burrow cams on Ulva Island, Stewart Island, NZ. Kiwi are a precocial species, which means the young hatch in a relatively mature & mobile state and are quickly able to fend for themselves. Kiwi chicks hatch fully feathered, with their eyes open, and are able to start leaving the nest on their own after about 5 days. Prior to this, they survive with the yolk sac from their time in the egg still attached, which nourishes them until they leave the nest and start foraging for themselves.
Interaction between chicks and parents/other kiwi are rarely captured, as the chicks quickly begin making their own way in the world. This chick has been out of the nest for three days, so is approximately 8 days old. We captured these special interactions between chick & mum... did you hate having your hair brushed too?
