The Calm Before the Atlantic | Final Sail Before Cape2Rio 2025

The calm before one of the biggest adventures of my sailing journey.

This quiet Sunday sail was our final moment of stillness before the start of Cape2Rio 2025, a short escape onto the water under clear blue skies, glassy seas, and a gentle 5-knot breeze, with the occasional 12-knot gust. Conditions like this don’t come often, especially not before an Atlantic crossing, and we took the time to truly appreciate it.

Aboard Solitaire, a Compass 47, everything felt peaceful and unhurried. No pressure, no countdowns, just the rhythm of the boat, the sound of water slipping past the hull, and the quiet understanding among the crew that this calm won’t last for long. Soon, the Atlantic will remind us who’s in charge.

These moments matter. They’re the deep breath before the storm, the chance to reflect on how far we’ve come and what lies ahead. In just days, we’ll trade smooth seas for open-ocean swells, light winds for unpredictable systems, and Sunday serenity for the full intensity of offshore racing.

This sail wasn’t about speed or performance, it was about mindset. Resetting, preparing, and soaking in the last taste of coastal sailing before committing fully to the Atlantic crossing. The kind of sail that reminds you why you fell in love with the ocean in the first place.

Cape2Rio isn’t just a race, it’s an adventure, a test of seamanship, endurance, teamwork, and respect for the sea. And this was our quiet farewell to calm waters before pointing the bow ahead and letting the Atlantic take over.
