The UCL Groundhop begins with a trip to South West Derbyshire as Gresley Rovers take on newly relegated Sherwood Colliery!
Before kick-off, I caught up with Gresley chairman Gary – a true club stalwart who’s been involved for over 25 years in roles ranging from manager to chairman. He spoke about his journey with the club, missing out on promotion back in 1997 due to ground grading, and the club’s ambitions heading into this season.
On the pitch, it was a nightmare start for Gresley as they gave away two stonewall penalties, both dispatched confidently by Sherwood striker Craig Westcarr. Despite some fightback from the hosts, Westcarr completed his hat-trick with a superb finish to make it 3-0 at the break.
Gresley did pull one back early in the second half with a bit of luck, but Westcarr wasn’t done – adding a fourth to kill any hope of a comeback. Sherwood wrapped it up with a fifth, a cracking volley to seal a dominant 5-1 win.
A tough start for Gresley, but a big statement from Sherwood Colliery in their first UCL outing.
