During an appearance for the P.O.R.C.C. in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on March 8, 1993, the Chicago R&B vocal group The Magnificents performed a special tribute set to the Moonglows, one of their favorite acts. The two groups first met in New York City in the 1950s, and the Magnificents impressed their idols by performing several of the group's hits for them a cappella.
At the time of this performance, the Magnificents consisted of founder and original lead Johnny Keyes, bass Rufus Hunter, who first joined the group in 1957 and also recorded and performed with the Cameos and El Dorados, first tenor Julius “Skeeter” Hawkins, who initially recorded with Keyes when they backed Beverly Ann Gibson in 1959, and tenor and second lead Reginald “Reggie” Gordon (1936-2012), who joined in 1957 and also performed with the Rays and recorded with Keyes as the Shell Brothers.
After displaying their proficiency to Moonglows' founder, Harvey Fuqua, they often backed him in concert performances in the early 2000s as his "Moonglows". The Magnificents continued performing until Reggie Gordon's death in 2012. Keyes died in 2018.
In this 17-minute film, shared by Steve "Weet" Larcovic and Bill "Zimp" Zimpleman, the group performs a cappella renditions of "Starlite", "When I'm With You", an unrehearsed "In My Diary", and a full-band version of "I Was Wrong".
Backing the Magnificents here are the P.O.R.C.C. All-Stars led by Steve “Weet” Larcovic (guitar) with John Sabre (saxophones), Steve Kacin (bass), Fred Delu (keyboards) and Terry Bates (drums). Copying, reuploading, distributing, or selling in whole or in part is prohibited.
