V/Line Passenger Trains at South Geelong - Victorian Transport

In this video we visit South Geelong, a station on the Geelong Line which as the name suggests; is in the south side of the regional city of Geelong. Here we see some typical weekday action at the station, where we mostly see three and six car V/Line Vlocity DMU's arriving and departing the station. During off-peak South Geelong is the terminus of half of trains on the Geelong Line, with the other half continuing to the terminus at Waurn Ponds. As a result we see a number of terminating & originating trains use the nearby turnback sidings. On weekdays a number of long distance trains on the Warrnambool Line run express through South Geelong. As a result we also see two V/Line N Class locomotive hauled services pass through the station.

South Geelong station opened on the 1st November 1883, around 8 years after the line through the area to Winchelsea (and later beyond) was constructed. The station was also the junction for the line to Queenscliff until it closed in For many years the station was only served by long distance trains to Warrnambool, until the 4th November 1968 when local Geelong trains were extended to terminate/originate at South Geelong. This remained this way until Geelong trains were extended to Marshall in September 2005.

The current station building at South Geelong opened in 1984 which replaced the original timber building, and houses a waiting room with ticket office, toilets, a kiosk, and a lever-frame signal box that is still in use. However South Geelong station won't remain in its current state for much longer. As part of the duplication of the Geelong Line from South Geelong to Waurn Ponds, South Geelong station will undergo a major upgrade which will include a new second platform, overhead footbridge, and new station buildings. Major construction is set to begin shortly and will be completed by late 2024.
