This is the New Ford Explorer a slimmed down eco-friendly version of it's big old cousin from the USA. This European friendly Explorer is the second all electric SUV that Ford have produced, after the Mach one, which appeared back in 2020.
Inside it's very Volkswagen ID 4, which isn’t a bad thing I hear you say, after Ford did a deal with VW to supply most of the tech on the all-electric explorer.
Lets take a look around this new all electric offering from Ford and see what we think of the 2025 Ford Explorer.
The all new Ford Explorer comes in two trim levels, Select Trim comes with 19in alloy wheels, keyless entry, LED headlights with auto high beam, adaptive cruise control and dual-zone climate control.
Upgrading to top of the range Premium trim adds loads more luxuries, including heated front seats, a massaging driver's seat, a heated steering wheel, keyless entry and start, wireless phone-charging, ambient interior lighting, a powered tailgate, a panoramic glass sunroof, 20in alloy wheels and matrix LED headlights (which can remain on high beam without dazzling other drivers). You don't get a heat pump though, if you want one of those you'll have to pay an extra £1000, but it’s well worth it in my opinion as it will save on your battery range.
There are 6 different colours to choose from if you like white you're in luck because it's included in the price the other five colours will cost you an extra £800
If you want a Head-Up Display, Driver Fatigue Alert system, Lane Centering with Lane Change Assist, Active Park Assist and a 360-Degree Parking Camera you will have to opt for the £1300 extra drivers assistance pack.
Underneath the rather good looking and stylish Ford explorer you'll find it has the same motors and batteries as the VW ID 4. There's a choice between a single motor rear wheel drive, single motor rear wheel drive extended range and a dual motor all-wheel drive with extended range.
Rear wheel drive single motor cars get a 52KWH battery which develops the equivalent of 170 BHP and you'll get up to 170 miles on the motorway with around 221 miles combined around town.
rear wheel drive extended range cars get a 77 kilowatt battery with a motor that produces 286 brake horsepower. motorway driving will see 272 miles or thereabouts with a combined range of 354 miles.
finally the all-wheel drive extended version gets two electric motors that between them produce the eqivalent of 340 BHP however you get slightly less mileage as there are two motors sucking at the battery so on the motorway you'll see 255 miles and 329 combined miles of range.
If you want the Explorer with the fastest charging speed, you'll need the Extended Range AWD, which can officially "refuel" at up to 185kW. The Extended Range RWD hits 135kW while the Standard Range RWD manages 145kW. In the real world, that means a 10-80% charge with a fast charger should take just under minutes and a 7kw home charger around 8-9 hours.
In the rear theres a 60/40 seat split with ski hatch and 470 litres of boot space, plus a height adjustable floor
.
When it was tested for safety by Euro NCAP, the Explorer scored the full five stars, which is good news, but nothing unusual among modern electric SUVs.
The Explorer’s warranty lasts for three years or 60,000 miles, which is a bit disappointing compared with the five-year, unlimited mileage warranty you get with the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and the seven-year, 100,000-mile warranty on the Kia EV6 however, Ford does cover the battery for eight years or 100,000 miles.
