"It was the worst day of World War Two - we were getting hammered."

Ex Royal Marine and World War 2 Veteran Clifford Coates talks about his experiences in France.
“The number of men who were blown up was shocking, dreadful, they just disappeared...there was nothing left. It was the worst part of the whole war. We were chest high in the water as we made the landing. Shocking, dreadful, the number of men that were killed there, just disappeared, blew up, nothing left. it was the worst part of the whole war. We were getting a bit of a hammering by the time we got over there. We lost 4 of the 7 men on our landing craft. One of the men who were killed by the Germans we couldn’t find. They found his body the other week – he was buried with full military honours.”

As we approach the 75th anniversary of D-Day, 94-year-old Royal Marine Clifford Coates, remembers his worse day of conflict.
