Andy’s is part 1 or 2 (1 or the other) of our Ribbon Rides mini series featuring trails in a post Ribbon ride scenario. There will also be additional trails associated with “Ribbon Rides” in the tube, but they won’t be back to back to back.

Andy’s Loop can be broken into two parts, the first being the dropin (unofficial name) and the second being the ride out towards the Eagle’s Tail and the Tabeguache TH. Important: The dropin is not mandatory if a rider seeks to ride out of the Ribbon, but is 100% necessary to reach other trail options such as the Gunny Loop or Free Lunch at the end of the Ribbon. It will require a short and technical climb out.

In this film, we look at the whole thing starting at the dropin at the top of Little Park Road going back to the Ribbon intersection. This first part is fairly technical with a couple optional double black diamond drops. However, they can all be bypassed. What can’t be bypassed is a short mid technical rock chute featuring some small rollers. Let the camera not fool you, it’s a bit more complicated than what it appears to be. After the rock chute, you’ll be at the Ribbon intersection.

This next part is 100% relevant to the Ribbon ride option for Andy’s. You follow the wash for a minute before having to climb a difficult traverse along the bentonite hillside below Eagle’s Wing. This climb is pretty tough and features moderate exposure, so be careful. It requires good technical climbing skills and mid fitness to clean the features. (none of which I possess right now)

After gaining the ridge you’ll be rewarded with a remarkable chunky yet flowy downhill with views of the east entrance of the Colorado National Monument. Soak them in and then soak in the ride. This section is really fun. The second half is mostly flowing, but be careful in a post rain scenario where portions of the trail could be washed out.

After the last downhill bits you’ll have to climb out. The only trail connecting to Andy’s is the Eagle’s Tail. Eagle’s is one the most technical trails in the Grand Valley, but even though Andy’s bypasses most of the double black diamond gnar, the lower remaining sections are fairly difficult. If you are ending the ride, take the Tail to Pet-e-kes and then back to the TH. You can also opt to take the Tail south to High Noon and re-access the other trails in the Mid Lunch Loops like Holy Cross or Pucker Up.

Andy’s Loop is a low end black diamond trail with the most extreme features being optional, a climb that is quite exposed, and a couple tricky sections on Eagle’s Tail.
