OLD SARUM CASTLE | The LOST CITY on the HILLS of WILTSHIRE

Old Sarum Castle, located near Salisbury in Wiltshire, is one of England’s most fascinating ancient sites, layered with over 5,000 years of history.

Originally an Iron Age hillfort, it was later occupied by the Romans, Saxons, and Normans, each leaving their mark on this commanding hilltop. After the Norman Conquest, William the Conqueror built a motte-and-bailey castle here around 1070, which became both a royal residence and a military stronghold.

However, by the 13th century, conflict between the clergy and the castle’s military authorities led to the relocation of the cathedral and settlement to a nearby valley—where modern Salisbury was founded.

Old Sarum was gradually abandoned, leaving behind its striking earthworks and stone ruins. Today, visitors can explore the vast ramparts, the remains of the royal castle, and the footprint of the original cathedral while enjoying sweeping views across the Wiltshire countryside.
