Rye Castle Museum, also known as the Ypres Tower, is one of the most distinctive historic landmarks in the medieval town of Rye, East Sussex. Built in the 14th century, the tower was originally constructed as part of the town’s defences against French raids during the turbulent years of coastal warfare.
Over the centuries, it has served many roles — from a fortification and private residence to a prison and courthouse. Its thick stone walls, narrow stairways, and commanding views over the marshes reflect its long-standing purpose as a guardian of the town.
The museum offers an engaging look into Rye’s rich past. Exhibits inside the Ypres Tower explore topics such as local smuggling, maritime history, crime and punishment, and the town’s prosperous medieval era. A second museum site, located nearby at East Street, expands on domestic life and local crafts.
