If you could have your own railroad in 1906 you were truly in the wealthy class! Anyone who was anyone wanted their own line and Francis Marion "Borax" Smith was no different. After all it made sense. His new borax mine was a stop on the route to the biggest gold strike since the California Gold Rush of 1849. The last of the Wild West was roaring in places like Tonopah, Goldfield, Beatty and Rhyolite in the heart of the Bullfrog mining district. In 1906 the Death Valley country was at its height. The boom was truly booming. Treasures were being found, gold was discovered and millionaires were made overnight. It was the last great rush on the American frontier. Why wouldn't you want to build a railroad into the heart of it while it carried out your borax as well. In this clip you will discover the hardships of building such a line. You will also see what it took to face the biggest obstacle to getting the railroad through, the magnificent Amargosa Canyon in the Mojave Desert. This is a story of true tenacity and ingenuity, hardship and endurance. Building a railroad in 1906 was no small feat. This is the story of the Tonopah & Tidewater and How to Build a Railroad (in 1906)!
