This video walks through how to start with a chart of data and determine all the variables in the Hardy-Weinberq equation to determine whether evolution is occurring. If you're just starting out, watch this video first: • How to use the Hardy-Weinberg Equation
If you're working through questions like this, here are some helpful hints in case you get stuck:
1. Remember: p + q = 1 and p² + 2pq + q² = 1.
2. If you have a set of data, start by determining q², which is the proportion of individuals with the recessive phenotype (# of recessive phenotype individuals divided by # of total individuals).
3. Determine q next. q = √q²
4. p + q = 1. Solve for p.
5. Now you have the values for p and q, so you can determine p² and 2pq.
6. You now have p and q (the allele frequencies) and p², 2pq, and q² (the genotype frequencies).
7. To figure out the number of individuals with the p², 2pq, or q² genotypes, multiply the respective frequency you just determined by the total number of individuals in the population.
