There are two major differences in the way women who have had breast cancer need to approach bone health and the prevention of osteoporosis.
#1 - Women who have had breast cancer are depleted in estrogen and are on an accelerated track to menopause. Estrogen is a hormone that helps to prevent the loss of bone density, but you've likely been put on medications that suppress your estrogen levels. Women who have not had breast cancer can use hormone replacement therapy, but that's not an option for you. So, it is really important to pull the other levers available for you to prevent the loss of bone density, like...
#2 - ...Lifting! If you are subscribed to my channel, you know that I am always encouraging you to lift heavy things. BUT, the key is to start low and slow. It's important to help your lymphatic system heal and adjust to the increase demand of physical exercise and weight training.
Remember! Lifting weights is absolutely safe for women who have lymphedema or who are at risk for lymphedema. In fact, lifting weights can reduce your risk and help prevent the exacerbation of lymphedema symptoms. But, it's all about the "appropriate dose."
