Fanfare - Jacques-Nicolas Lemmens ((1823-1881). David Briggs on the 1899 Aristide Cavaillé-Coll organ of Notre-Dame de Vimoutiers, France.
On 12th/13th July I had the huge pleasure of a creating a close bond with Aristide Cavaillé-Coll's last instrument, built for Notre-Dame de Vimoutiers in 1899. It only has 30 stops but packs a considerable punch - every stop really counts. Even just recorded on an iPhone, you can sense the beautifully poetic mélange of the Flutes and Undulants. This organ even possesses two sets of strings (Récit and Positif - just like NDP). The instrument was recently beautifully restored by les Frérès Robert (Nantes) and is in wonderful condition.
Very grateful to Patrick Goulin (Chairman of the Association) and Julian Matthews (Organist Titulaire) for encouraging me to post some video of this remarkable instrument. If you are in the area, it's well worth stopping in. Absolutely stunning church, too...
This recording was just made on my trusty iPhone 13, up in the tribune, virtually 'inside' the organ. It's rather close, but it gives you a good idea of the sheer electricity and rich éclat of the voicing - incredible for only 30 stops. I hope you enjoy it!
