The Utah Abandoned Mine Reclamation Program, part of the Division of Oil, Gas and Mining, recently completed phase two of the Picacho Peak Project in Beaver County. This month-long project involved closing 53 hazardous mine openings on private property using steel grates and backfill.
The mining district opened in the late 1870s and operated until the early 20th century, producing silver, lead, zinc, copper, and gold. Although old mines can be intriguing to unsuspecting explorers, they often contain dangerous gasses, unstable structures, and explosives. The program works to protect the public from these hazards by sealing off access to openings and cleaning up waste.
