Mystras - Hilltop Fortress in the Heart of the Peloponnese, Greece | Treasures of the World

West of Sparta, in the heart of the Peloponnese, lies Mystras, a city emblematic of late Byzantine culture. Its history began in 1249 with the construction of a Frankish hilltop fortress by the crusader Guillaume de Villehardouin. However, by 1263, he was forced to cede it to Byzantium. Beneath the Frankish hilltop castle, Byzantine princes built palaces, monasteries, and churches. The Palace of the Despots became a center of courtly splendor and intellectual life.

Despite later conquests by the Turks and Venetians, Mystras remained the flourishing capital of Laconia until it was destroyed during the Greek War of Independence. Today, only the churches and monasteries have survived the decline of Mystras.
