There is nothing like full swales, with the frogs calling for a mate, dragonflies buzzing around, and tadpole galore. None of that would be possible in the desert without these earthworks. Even though these swales are not being used in a conventional way, they are serving multiple purposes, which is the epitome of Permaculture.
If all structures were full of water, the water holding capacities would be:
Swale 1: Approximately 8,079 gallons
Swale 2: Approximately 5,835 gallons
Overflow Pond: Approximately 3,770 gallons
Total Water Holding Capacity: Approximately 17,684 gallons.
