Sailing back from Weymouth Harbour after a cracking few days spent there. We knew the wind was predicted to be strong all day, so we headed east with both sails fully reefed in.
Passing the cruise ships anchored in Weymouth Bay, we sailed down the beatuful Jurassic Coast of Dorset. Passing the rough waters off St Albans Head, we were about three miles off the coast. The wind by then had been a constant 28 gusting 35, and we encountered an enormous swell about three miles of Durlston Head. No filming at this time as my phone was tucked away in my waterproofs. We got a good soaking and the swell was enough to fill the cockpit with water every now and again, with huge waves coming at us from behind. We took a big wave which knocked the boat sideways and with the wind gusting our boom was damaged. The sea was too rough to see to the damaged boom so we had to tie a rope around a cleat and the end of the boom to secure it until we reached calmer seas. I recorded my last shot at about midday (1.50) into film. The rough sea lasted about three hours and we struggled to get past Swanage and into Poole Bay with just a bit of Genoa and against a strong tide (with the engine going). We managed to sail on to Yarmouth Harbour for a hot shower and a large strong drink.
