Here’s today’s viewer question:

I was wondering if you could please talk about the difference between protein powders, specifically organic protein powders and plant based protein powders. In addition, do we have to have a protein shake within 30 minutes of a workout, or can you just have some food if you’re hungry?

Whey vs Plant Based Protein Powder: What Is The Difference?
Brad: One of the main differences when comparing whey vs. a plant based protein powder, such as soy or rice protein, is the amino acid profile.

If it doesn’t upset your stomach, whey protein powder is the highest quality protein, due to the complete amino acid profile.

For example, the whey protein has the best balance of branched-chain amino acids, also referred to as BCAAs.

This is important because branched-chain amino acids contain all the essential amino acids that your body can’t produce on its own, including:
Leucine
Isoleucine
Valine

Since your body can’t produce these essential amino acids on it’s own, you need to get it from food.

When compared to whey protein powder, plant based protein powder is going to have a different amino acid profile, that is lower in the branched-chain amino acids.

This doesn’t necessarily mean it’s bad, it’s just a different amino acid profile.

Jess: Plant based protein powder may work better for you if you have lactose sensitivities.

With some of the clients that I work with, I sometimes switch them over to a plant-based protein if the whey protein is upsetting their digestion.

If this is the case for you, a plant based protein powder is an option you can try.

However, on the other hand, I’ve also had people who have had bad reactions to plant based protein powder, therefore they do better on whey protein powder.

Therefore it just depends on you.

It’s not that plant based protein powder is always safe for digestion, sometimes it’s even worse.

Therefore you just have to try it out.

Hands down, I’ve always preferred the flavor and texture of whey protein powder.

Wouldn’t you agree?

Brad: Absolutely.

Jess: I have never tried a plant based protein that actually tastes good or has good texture.

It’s so gritty, grainy, and the flavor is bad.
