One of two short films which were both directly inspired by the work of John Cage, but which also owe a debt to Steve Reich (especially Reich's early tape loop pieces). The video track is identical in both pieces, but the audio track is different. The six videos of the flashing LEDs have not been manipulated in any way to deliberately create a composition - any sense of composition comes from the random interplay between the LEDs flashing at different rates. Each LED is assigned a different notes on the toy piano, and this note is repeated over and over again. The mode used is the phrygian mode, as this mode was used by Cage in his 1948 'Suite for Toy Piano', and was also used by John Adams for his wonderful 1977/78 piano composition 'Phrygian Gates'. The LED's which are permanently on are represented by the tanpura drone. Many thanks to Kurt James Werner for the toy piano samples, and to Matt Rahaim for the tanpura recording.
