Britain has faced brutal winters every decade since the 1950s, each one testing the country in different ways. In 1956, the sea froze solid along the coast. The Big Freeze of 1962 to 63 lasted three straight months with snowdrifts reaching 20 feet and the Thames freezing over. The Winter of Discontent in 1978 brought strikes and mountains of rubbish rotting in city centers. Then came 1982, when Britain recorded its coldest temperatures ever at minus 27.2 degrees in Scotland and minus 26.1 in England, records that still stand today.
