How to create Hub Sites in SharePoint

Hub Sites are a critical component of proper SharePoint Information Architecture. If you have lots and lots of SharePoint sites, Hub Sites will help you organize those sites into logical hierarchies that match your company's org chart and business processes.

What are Hub Sites? Hub Sites allow you to create common navigation among various SharePoint Sites you have in your environment.

Use Cases for Hub Sites. Anytime you would like to have a common navigation for multiple sites, you would need to create a Hub. Some examples of Hub Sites: Intranet Hub (with links to different departments and teams), Project Hub (with links to different project sites), Department Hub (with links to sites for a given department).

Hub Site Limits. You can create up to 2,000 hub sites in your tenant.

How to create a Hub Site in SharePoint. There are 3 primary steps involved.
1. Register a Site as a Hub
2. Associate other site(s) with the Hub
3. Build Hub Navigation

What happens when you create a Hub. In addition to the Hub navigation that propagates to the associated sites, other sites also inherit the Hub Site Theme and Header style.

What does not happen when you create a Hub. There is no impact on the security & permissions of associated sites. There is also no site logo inheritance.

Hub Data Roll-Up. When you create a Hub Site, you also get the following additional benefits:
Roll up of News Posts (via News Web Part)
Roll up of Events (via Events Web Part)
Roll uo of Documents (via HCWP Web Part)
Ability to display Sites that are part of the Hub (via Sites Web Part)

Optional/Advanced Steps after you create a Hub Site. After you create a Hub Site, you can do the following additional improvements:

1. Add Hub Logo. Allows you to add a clickable small icon/logo that will appear inside the Hub Navigation.

2. Set up Navigation Audience Targeting. It will allow you to personalize Hub Navigation and display navigation labels and links based on the user logged in.

3. Sync Hub Permissions. It will allow you to sync Visitors from the Hub Site to the associated site (requires Site Owners to allow the sync as well)

4. Set up who can connect/associate sites to the Hub. It will allow you to avoid Governance issues and prevent other users from connecting to your Hub.

5. Create Hub Association Approval Workflow. It will allow you to create a workflow where you can approve/reject Hub Connection requests.

6. Embed/Nest Hub inside the other Hub. In case you are part of a large organization, you can nest a hub inside the other hub. For example, the Department Hub can be nested inside the Regional Hub, and the Regional Hub can be nested inside the Corporate Hub.

7. Register a Hub Site as a Home Site. In case you want to take advantage of Viva Connections, you can register your Hub Site as a Home Site.

8. Check Hub Usage. Once you create a Hub Site, you also get another Usage Report for the entire Hub.
