It's Important to diagnose pregnancy EARLY in a sexually active woman, so that the woman receives early prenatal care and harmful medications, alcohol or smoking can be stopped or if the pregnancy is unwanted, then counselling regarding termination of pregnancy can be provided.

As you all know the signs and symptoms of pregnancy, But those could be due to many other reasons as well. In PCOD, you may have missed periods, nausea and vomiting can be due to many other reasons too. BUT we want to know if the woman is pregnant or not.

If pregnancy occurs or fertilised egg implants, the embryo secretes hCG, into your blood. Some hCG also gets passed in your urine. And we will detect beta hCG in urine by pregnancy detection kits commercially available.

POSITIVE RESULT :
C is control line
T is the Test line
First we should see that there is coloured line in the C region after every test, which means the test Kit is working fine and valid and we can proceed to check the result.
If Both lines are seen then it’s Positive

NEGATIVE RESULT:
If only one line is present, that is if , Only C or Control line is seen, then it’s - Negative

INVALID TEST:
If the colour band does not appear on both the control and test region. If it’s invalid then try again with another card.
Other Scenarios which you may encounter are

Faint line at Test Region
Reasons are
▶️ If you check too early
The hCG has not increased much and you could get a faint line
SO repeat the test again after 3-4 days and check.
▶️ If the woman checks even after 1 week after the missed period, the line they are getting is a Faint line.

▶️ Blood Test for Pregnancy
Pregnancy can be found out earlier by blood test than Urine Pregnancy tests. Beta HCG can be found as early as 8-9 days post fertilisation. It means, Beta HCG can be found in the blood before the first missed menstrual period. Here, the levels of Beta hCG are found with blood tests.

Normal values in non pregnant women is 10 mIU/mL.. The hCG hormone is measured in milli-international units per milliLitre (mIU/mL).
In pregnant women ,Beta hCG values double every 1.4 to 2 days, i.e. 48 hours , reaching a maximum level between 60 to 70 days of pregnancy. Later the concentration slowly declines in later months.
You may get a value of Beta HCG and against it, the no of weeks of gestation or pregnancy. So with that, can we infer that the woman is pregnant ?
NO, Because Beta HCG is found in many conditions like
▶️ Ectopic Pregnancy
▶️ Hydatidiform mole or choriocarcinoma
▶️ Pregnancy with Down syndrome
▶️ Spontaneous abortions
Where the pregnancy is outside the uterus , called ectopic pregnancy.
Sometimes the pregnancy cannot develop normally, resulting in a hydatidiform mole, which is just a mass of tissue.
Lower levels of hCG are found in ectopic and spontaneous abortion.
