Mbira Lesson at SOAS University, London – “Bangiza” 🎵
In this video, we’re teaching the beautiful Zimbabwean Mbira song “Bangiza”, focusing on backing vocals before introducing the instrument itself. At SOAS University in London, students learn how the men’s and ladies’ vocal parts differ, and after demonstrating each section, I add the lead vocal, bringing the full traditional sound together.
Teaching students to sing the song first is the right foundation. When they learn the backing vocals before playing Mbira, they develop:
A strong ear for variations
An understanding of the song’s structure
The ability to hear vocals and patterns internally while they play
Once they move on to the instrument, the song is already alive in their minds.
We also introduce challenging variations to help students:
Build focus and precision
Maintain the correct patterns
Keep a steady rhythm even when other variations are present
This lesson shows the importance of patience, concentration, and consistent practice in mastering traditional Mbira music. Watching the students at SOAS apply these techniques demonstrates how guided learning can turn beginners into confident, expressive players.
At Chaminuka Mbira School, we teach:
Mbira – the heart of Zimbabwean music
Hosho/Shakers – keeping the rhythm alive
Ngoma/Drums – traditional energy and heartbeat
Marimba/Xylophones – harmony and melody
Whether you’re learning for fun or working to master Zimbabwean spiritual music, this video shows how strong foundations make all the difference.
