The unquiet graves whisper of violent death. Row on row, they stand in vigil, circling a man dressed for the hunt, coated in the colours of a massacre, splitting apart the bodies of former friends and citizens like so much firewood. He, who was once a father and husband, will shortly show the line between man and beast is not as thick as one would hope.
Chihaya watches her pink-tailed guide stop and scratch her head. ‘Something wrong?’
‘Give me a moment,’ says Koyori. ‘I’m thinking.’
‘You’re lost, aren’t you.’
‘No, I am not lost. It’s just that my hippocampus has grown so exceedingly large from the vast quantities of knowledge I have absorbed that sometimes the information I’m trying to retrieve takes a while to traverse the ol’ grey matter, if you know what I mean.’
‘Really? I would’ve thought, seeing as your brain is so slippery smooth, thoughts would skate up on you in a flash.’
‘Will the hired muscle please refrain from speaking when I am cogitating?’
‘Only if “the brains” hurries up and remembers the way we’re supposed to be heading.’
‘You know what? Why don’t we just ask for directions? We are social animals, are we not?’ Koyori marches on.
‘Yeah, you’re an animal, all right,’ mutters Chihaya as she follows suit.
Across a stonework bridge littered with smoldering corpses, they march without comment. Up and up the flights of stairs they go until the ground levels out. They enter a graveyard, not expecting to come across another living soul.
‘Wait!’ says Koyori, holding up a halting hand. ‘I see someone.’
‘Looks like an old man,’ says Chihaya. She looks over at her guide expectantly. ‘Well?’
‘Huh?’
‘Aren’t you gonna ask for directions?’
‘Mm, I’m not sure.’
‘What do you mean?’
‘Something feels off.’
Chihaya looks at the old man sitting hunched over on a tombstone. She looks back at Koyori. ‘Are you serious?’
Koyori sighs and her shoulders sag. ‘Just keep that saw-cleaver handy, will you?’
The two of them walk out into the moldering air of the graveyard, their footfalls squelching in the mud.
‘That’s strange,’ says Koyori, looking down at her feet as she walks.
‘What?’ says Chihaya.
‘It hasn’t rained in weeks.’
‘So?’
‘So why is the ground wet?’
Chihaya looks down. She lifts one of her boots and clods of lurid red earth fall away. ‘Oh.’
‘Yep,’ says Koyori. ‘I kinda thought the air smelled like a slaughterhouse.’
The old man stands up, facing away. ‘Beasts all over the shop…’
‘I’m not a beast,’ says Chihaya. ‘Wish I could say the same for my friend here.’
‘Hey!’ says Koyori.
The old man turns. His eyes are covered with soiled bandages. Even so, Chihaya can feel the savagery of his gaze. ‘You’ll be one of them, sooner or later.’
‘I think we’re gonna have to kill this guy,’ whispers Chihaya from the side of her mouth. She waits for a response, then looks over. ‘Koyori?’
She spots Koyori hightailing it back in the direction they had come from.
‘Unbelievable,’ says Chihaya with a small shake of her head. She sets her chin and turns to face the old man. ‘Alright, old timer.’ She flicks her saw-cleaver open, disgorging a shower of sparks and flinging flakes of dried blood and rust on the ground. ‘Let’s see what you got.’
