In this video I strip a donor locomotive and start preparing the resin kit that will result in a DSB Class R (I) steam locomotive. The model will be based on a kit from Tikøb Hobby and a donor model from Liliput.
In the early 1910s the Danish state railways (DSB) needed more powerful locomotives to haul trains up the rather steep inclines in the eastern part of Jutland. DSB commissioned Borsig in Berlin to design and build the new class of locomotives which resulted in a 2'C/4-6-0/Ten-Wheeler two-cylinder loco using super-heated steam technology. The first of the new class R locomotives were delivered in 1912. They were an immediate success and more where ordered first from Borsig and later, after World War I broke out, from Winterthur in Switzerland. Although the 20 class R locos performed very well the two massive cylinders gave the class R locomotives a rather hard drive so 10 new similar engines but with three cylinders were ordered. These became known as class R mark II – R (II). Subsequently, the older two-cylinder locos were re-designated as class R mark I – R (I). In the early years the 30 class R (I) and R (II) engines primarily served as express train locomotives. However, here in the 1950s where my layout is set the locos were used for a variety of duties and were found both in passenger- and goods train services.
No mass-produced model of the DSB class R locomotive exists, but in this series of videos I will combine a resin kit from Danish small scale producer Tikøb Hobby og Støberi with parts from a Liliput donor locomotive (L 131999).
