J.S. Bach [BWV 846 / Praeludium No. 1]– Without Pedal: Feeling the Overtones.

It’s been a while since my last post.(As I’m writing this, it’s January 9.)

At the end of last year, my external SSD suddenly stopped responding,and I couldn’t open the drawings I was working on or the videos I was in the middle of editing.

With a fresh start,I chose The Well-Tempered Clavier, Book I — Prelude No. 1 for my first post of the year.

I practiced without using the pedal, listening carefully to the overtones and how the sounds overlap.The more I practiced, the deeper this piece felt.

As I kept playing, I had this strange feeling of being drawn into the sound—I almost drifted off while practicing (haha).

I recorded both versions, with pedal and without.Playing with the pedal felt more comfortable.Without the pedal, I was trying to
1. connect the half notes,
2. let the overtones resonate, and
3. place the right-hand notes on top of those overtones—and balancing all of that was quite challenging.

The simpler something looks, the more complex its structure often is.
And yet, it appears simple—that’s where I glimpse the root of beauty.

Beauty seems to follow certain rules.It stays within them, yet in a good way, it also gently surprises our expectations.That’s the feeling I get when I study Bach.
