Diwali, the Festival of Lights, is celebrated across five days, each associated with profound Hindu mythological stories or Katha that embody the triumph of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance.
The most widely known Diwali Katha is the return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya after his 14-year exile and victory over the demon king Ravana. The people of Ayodhya lit thousands of diyas (oil lamps) to welcome their king, a tradition that continues today.
Diwali's third and most important day is dedicated to Lakshmi Puja, marking the emergence of Goddess Lakshmi, the deity of wealth and prosperity, from the cosmic churning of the ocean (Samudra Manthan). She is worshipped alongside Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles, to bestow wisdom (Shubh) and wealth (Labh).
In Southern India, and on the second day (Naraka Chaturdashi or Choti Diwali), the story of Lord Krishna's and Satyabhama's defeat of the demon Narakasura is celebrated, symbolizing the destruction of ego and oppression. These ancient tales form the spiritual foundation for the world's most joyful festival.
