ABOUT THIS VIDEO:
On July 14, 2011, the two jazz giants had several concerts under their belt for this Afro-Cuban project. Chucho Valdès starts a capella on the piano while Archie Shepp moves forward and the Cuban spirit takes over the ambiance with “Stela va a stellar.” When the free sound of the saxophone explodes in the night, the electricity goes up a notch.

It was Shepp who came up with the idea of this collaboration with the Cuban pianist. The two men are always confronting sounds and rhythms with their history and jazz. An insatiable composer, Valdès endlessly reinvents a Latin jazz be-bop phrasing that invades the mind. They alternate songs written by each of them, with Carlos Manuel Miyares Hernandez on saxophone for Shepp's “The Stars Are in Your Eyes.” The Afro-Cuban journey emerges in all its intensity against a background of percussion and singing with Dreiser Durruthy Bombalé on “Yansa.” Archie Shepp's voice echoes on the last song, “Révolution,” with all its raging intensity.
