Female composers, unfortunately still marginalized, were severely muted prior to the 20th century. Raphaella Aleotti, a skilled composer and instrumentalist, is believed to be the first female composer to have had sacred music published. Her double-choir motet, Surge, Propera Amica Mea combines Renaissance homophony and early Baroque polyphony to create a diverse and captivating setting of this text which speaks of a secret romance between two lovers. “Le Cantique des Cantiques” (or Song of Songs) written in 1952 by Jean-Yves Daniel-Lesur gives a contrasting approach to the same topic of love.
Surge, propera amica mea, speciosa mea, et veni.
Arise, my love, my fair one, and come away.
Columba mea, in foraminibus petrae, in caverna maceriae,
Oh, my dove, who is in the clefts of the rock, in secret places.
ostende mihi faciem tuam, sonet vox tua in auribus meis:
Let me see your face, let me hear your voice,
vox enim tua dulcis, et facies tua decora.
for your voice is sweet and your face is lovely.
(Song of Solomon 2:13-14)
