Within Temptation is a Dutch symphonic metal band formed in Wolvega, Netherlands, in 1996 by vocalist Sharon den Adel and guitarist Robert Westerholt. Joined by drummer Jeroen van Veen, bassist Martijn Spierenburg, guitarist Ruud Jolie, and later guitarist Stefan Helleblad, the band has become a cornerstone of the genre, blending gothic, symphonic, and power metal elements. Known for Sharon den Adel’s ethereal yet powerful vocals and cinematic soundscapes, they’ve released eight studio albums, with their 2019 album Resist achieving international chart success. Renowned for their elaborate live performances, including headline slots at festivals like Wacken Open Air, their latest album, Bleed Out (2023), released via Force Music Recordings, tackles socio-political themes while maintaining their signature orchestral intensity.

“Paradise (What About Us?)” is a dynamic track from Within Temptation’s sixth studio album, Hydra, released on January 31, 2014, via Nuclear Blast. Written by Sharon den Adel, Robert Westerholt, and co-producer Daniel Gibson, and featuring guest vocals by former Nightwish singer Tarja Turunen, the song combines pounding riffs, soaring orchestral elements, and a powerful vocal duet. Produced by Gibson and mixed by Robert Westerholt, its lyrics, such as “What about us? Isn’t it enough? / No, we’re not in paradise,” explore themes of unity and resistance against a flawed world, urging collective action. The track’s anthemic energy and dual vocal prowess make it a standout. Its 2013 music video, set in a post-apocalyptic wasteland, complements the song’s epic narrative, reinforcing its message of hope and defiance.
