I decided there wasn’t any reason for me to film the actual action of oiling out and instead I’m just posting the summary. Go back and watch part one and part two if you want additional details.
Summary:
Burnt umber tests-
Michael Harding burnt umber uses PBR6 for its pigment. As expected the Harding umber mixed with natural pigments lead white #1 has the severe beading up. when using RGH lead white mix with Harding PBR 6 there seems to be less of an issue. It’s not perfect but significantly better at taking an oiling in layer.
It’s possible that the different pigment type is the culprit, but I’m still not sure how the interaction between that pigment and the different brand of lead white should make any difference especially since there are no additives to either lead white.
Yellows- Harding cadmium yellow has a severe problem with beading up and or absorbing the oil. natural pigments cad yellow, which is also a PY 35 does not have a problem.
