A tail pull is a great way to activate your horses gluteals and stretch their lumbar muscles.
While many horse enjoy this stretch it does not traction or pull the vertebra apart past the sacrum. It DOES help stretch the muscles of their back as they pull against you. This stretch has been shown to help relieve some back pain in addition to working on their stability/balance with isometric contractions.
The key with this stretch is to keep the tail straight and in line with the croup. Pulling in an odd direction can cause pain and damage. Additionally, it is a slow gentle traction. NO JERKING or QUICK MOVEMENTS.
You can do this a few times a week and hold it each time for 10-15 seconds- NOT 5 minutes as stated in the video (we all make mistakes ; ))
