Yukio Mishima: The Last Samurai | Tooky History

Yukio Mishima, a pen name of Kimitake Hiraoka, was one of the most influential Japanese writers of the 20th century and was considered for the Nobel Prize three times. He voiced his political ideas publicly and was ready to go a long way for his ideas.

As a young child, Yukio Mishima lived with his grandmother, who was very strict and forced him to spend time with his female cousins. Mishima started writing poems, which was against his father’s wishes, who thought it to be too feminine.

He couldn’t participate in the WWII because he was mistakenly diagnosed for tuberculosis. Instead, he continued writing and developed great feelings towards Japan’s traditions and history.

After the war, the westernization of Japan began, which was against Mishima’s views. He formed a militia of students devoted to restore the values of pre-war Japan. During this time he became married with children, but there were rumors about him being homosexual.

In 1970, Mishima went to a Japanese servicemen office and tied down the commander. He held a speech in front of the soldiers in an attempt to start a coup. It failed, and he went back in.

Having seen his coup fail, Mishima prepared himself for seppuku, but his designated decapitator, Morita, failed to do it properly. Another member of his militia, Koga, took the sword and decapitated Mishima. Morita, embarrassed by his failure, committed seppuku as well.
