A much leaner work than William Schuman's violin concerto, this three-movement concerto for piano and small orchestra (1942) consists of a pensive central section which is flanked by two energetic movements. The piece received its premiere in 1943 with Daniel Saidenberg's Little Symphony and Roslayn Tureck as the soloist. This recording is still available.
The movements are as follows:
I. With energy and precision
II. Deliberately; attacca (7:52)
III. Half note = ca. 144 (15:36)
Performed by the Albany Symphony Orchestra and John McCabe (piano)
Conducted by David Alan Miller
The concerto is part of a full Schuman album including Credendum and Symphony No. 4. Available on the Albany Records label: http://www.albanyrecords.com/mm5/merc...
