601 is a bus route linking Monash University's Clayton Campus and nearby Huntingdale Station, an equally major transit hub for students and staff. First introduced in 2011 after years of complaints of inadequate bus frequencies of other routes linking the places (led to constant overcrowding), it is a direct route along North Road with no stops in between, with a journey time of only roughly 5 minutes at the fastest.
The bus we're traveling on is 186, the newest member of the fleet. It's also the first of the eight Volvo BZL electric buses slated to enter service at ComfortDelGro Melbourne's Oakleigh depot in the next few months as part of a three year electric bus trial sponsored by the state government, with other major Victorian operators such as Latrobe Valley Bus Lines and Seymour Coaches also trialing Volvo BZLs in their fleet. They will join Sunbury Bus Lines existing Custom Endeavours and Ventura Bus Lines plus Kinetic Melbourne's existing BYDs as the pioneering electric buses in Victoria. CDC's samples could mainly be found on routes 601 (weekdays) and 630 (weekends), both based out of Monash University.
