"Inverse problem methods are used in a multitude of scientific fields, from forensics and medical imaging to studies of the Earth, the oceans and the stars. In this talk we describe applications of inversion in geophysics, highlighting the power of the approach in solving linear and nonlinear problems, to untangle useful signals from ghostly noise, and to reveal properties of the Earth hidden deep below the ocean floor. Come and see how “the most beautiful idea of the 20th Century” is at the forefront of science in the 21st, and how we can transform the sound of air bubbles into spectacular, high-resolution images of the Earth’s subsurface."
