Beethoven: Symphony No. 5 in C Minor, Op. 67
The All-American Youth Orchestra
Leopold Stokowski, conductor
Recorded November 14, 1940, in Liederkranz Hall, New York City, on Columbia 78-rpm matrices XCO 30094 through XCO 30102. Issued in June, 1941, as Columbia Masterworks set M-451 (records 11543-D through 11547-D), and in automatic sequence as set MM-451 (records 11548-D through 11552-D). The symphony takes nine sides; the filler is Stokowski's orchestration of Bach's "Little" Fugue in G Minor, which has been uploaded separately.
The Fifth Symphony is in four movements:
1. Allegro con brio
2. Andante con moto (at 6:32)
3. Scherzo: Allegro (at 17:40)
4. Finale: Allegro (at 23:07)
The All-American Youth Orchestra was created by Stokowski in 1940 for purposes of touring and recording. It was drawn from recent graduates of the country's major music schools, aged 18-25, supplemented by a few players from the Philadelphia Orchestra.
