✉️ Briefing:
March 13th 1954, the Viet Minh launche a massive assault on the fortified positions of Diên Biên Phu. Backed against the wall and facing up to 80,000 enemies, the surrounded French forces try a desperate action: hold the base at all costs. Joined by airborne units of the Légion Étrangère (Foreign Legion), and Parachutistes Coloniaux (Colonial Paratroopers), they fought numerous close combat engagements until the fall of their command post. The human toll is catastrophic: around 11,700 French soldiers were captured, and only around 3,000 survived to their captivity. Towards the end of the battle, the French war correspondent Pierre Schoendorffer destroyed his footage, to prevent it from falling into the possession of the Vietnamese (who would have probably destroyed it anyways). As a result, we do not have a lot of footage from the French side of the battle, the suffering and the resilience. However, some tapes that Schoendorffer managed to keep ahold of during the battle were seized by the Russian war correspondent Roman Karmen, who kept these films secret from the Vietnamese before releasing them on his own. We can also mention the first American casualties in Vietnam: James McGovern and Wallace Bufford, pilots flying for the CIA (assigned to Air America) were shot down over the battlefield, while participating to the airdrops to supply the French troops.
