My favorite place to be for the 4th of July is Ohio Village at the Ohio History Connection in Columbus, Ohio!
This is a compilation of TWO years' worth of footage, because I never got around to putting this video together last year...
The village is now getting away from First Person interpretation... instead of being in character, costumed interpreters can simply answer visitors' questions directly, and use modern contrivances and modern examples to explain things.
This makes me curious - what do people think of that? Personally, I like first person. I like immersive experiences. I feel like I get a better feeling for what it really felt like to live back then when people in character are pointing out how different life is in a world before telecommunications/he combustion engine/sunscreen. But I also get that it forces indirect answers to what can be simple questions. And since our primary function is education, and THEN entertainment, isn't the most important thing to answer the question...?
Please put your opinions on this conundrum in the comments! There are a lot of museum folk out there who want to know.
