Peter - partner software engineer, joined Microsoft in 1998. Worked on different aspects of .NET, including C#, the garbage collector and code generation. Before Microsoft he worked at Borland, doing mainly compiler work for Delphi and C++.
We'll explore the internal workings of the .NET Garbage Collector and discuss recent changes to enhance performance and adapt to a changing environment. We’ll explain the various phases the GC goes through, how Workstation GC differs from Server GC, how Background GC works, and so on. Building on this we’ll understand how recent changes improve various aspects of the performance of both GC itself and the application. We’ll also discuss how recent trends (more cores, more memory, Linux, containers, micro services) affect what GC needs to do to be a good citizen. Finally we’ll talk about methods and tools to diagnose GC issues.
