Alphonso McClendon gives a talk on "Fashioning Black Culture: Beyond the Archive" at the "New Directions in Fashion Research Symposium" held on April 5, 2024 in NYC.
The symposium focused on new avenues of study in the interdisciplinary field of fashion. Scholars, curators, and collectors explored topics such as practice-based research, collecting practices, theories and methodologies, and the role of diversity, equity, and inclusion in fashion education.
Alphonso McClendon, an associate professor at Drexel University, has published “It’s a BlackThing, American Fashion Wants to Understand” in Fashion Studies, Vol. 5 and “Black byPopular Demand at HBCUs” in "Fresh, Fly, and Fabulous: Fifty Years of Hip Hop Style." He is the author of the book "Fashion and Jazz: Dress, Identity and Subcultural Improvisation."
