India has several food supplementation programs to support different segments of the population. These programs have been designed to meet the energy requirement of the population. The central and state governments have been keen to revise their supplements so that diverse foods meet multiple nutrient requirements. This is not easy because of the budgetary allocation per person for the program, despite the huge overall budget allocation because of the population size. Therefore, food optimisation programs have been developed and embedded into easy to use online tools hosted at www.datatools.sjri.res.in. Theoretical calculations using the tool have shown that it is possible to meet multiple nutrient requirements through supplementary nutrition programs with a very small budget. Efforts are in place to implement optimised food supplementation through some of the programs in certain states in India. This session will introduce the tools and the discuss the ongoing implementation program.
