Story One: The gloomy road

Part One

Чи є дорога, похмуріша за ту, що веде до великого міського смітника?
Is there a road more gloomy than the one that leads to the great city dump?

По ній раз у раз шмигають сірі або зелені сміттєвози, зрідка розтрушуючи черепки, картопляне лушпиння, скоринки хліба, пластмасові затички, різні залізячки і чого тільки не хочеш.
Along it, gray or green garbage trucks scurry back and forth, now and then scattering shards, potato peels, bread crusts, plastic caps, bits of metal, and all kinds of things imaginable.

А якщо здіймався дужчий вітер, то, дивись, із якої-небудь неприкритої машини, мов птахи, вилітали цукеркові обгортки, клаптики газет і навіть цілі аркуші із книжок з чудовими кольоровими малюнками…
And if a stronger wind rose, then look — from some uncovered truck, like birds, candy wrappers, scraps of newspapers, and even whole pages from books with wonderful colored pictures would fly out…

Усі, напевно, пригадують казку про Йонукаса, який за собою посипав дорогу крихтами хліба, щоб не заблукати і прийти з лісу додому.
Everyone probably remembers the fairy tale about Jonukas, who scattered bread crumbs along the road so as not to get lost and to find his way home from the forest.

Отож якби хто попав на смітник, то знайти дорогу назад було б завиграшки: так вона, та дорога, була рясно всипана різним дріб'язком…
So if someone were to end up at the dump, finding the way back would be easy: that road was so richly strewn with all kinds of small junk…

На жаль, із смітника дороги назад немає: все-все, що сюди привозять, пожирає вогонь, і вогнище палає таке велике, що його заграву видно далеко-далеко навкруги, навіть можна подумати, що то горить ціле село…
Unfortunately, there is no road back from the dump: everything that is brought here is devoured by fire, and the blaze burns so huge that its glow can be seen far and wide all around, one might even think that an entire village is burning…

Зараз уже пізно, дорога на смітник спустіла, всі сміттєвози відпочивають у гаражах, а водії надягають білі як сніг сорочки, пов'язують квітчасті краватки, готуючись зустріти Новий рік.
Now it is already late, the road to the dump has emptied, all the garbage trucks are resting in garages, and the drivers are putting on shirts white as snow, tying colorful ties, getting ready to meet the New Year.
