Welcome to Friday's at Five with Devon Howard! Introducing a new segment of music: Lit 🔥 Lit!
Lit 🔥 Lit is a segment dedicated to "amazing", "cool", "exciting", "fire", LIT pieces of organ repertoire considered to be traditional LITerature.
Today, we're kicking it off with Tiento 5th Tono by Juan Bautista José Cabanille. Cabanilles was a Spanish organist and composer at Valencia Cathedral. He is considered by many to have been the greatest Spanish Baroque composer and is sometimes referred to as the Spanish Bach.
Spanish Tiento’s are keyboard works designed to showcase the keyboard player’s technical master of “touch.” This particular tiento is for “Mano Izquierda” and places the left hand in the place of prominence with the solo.
Spanish organs were often quite small and featured split keyboards to give the performer more options.
The Jordi Bosch organ of Santanyi, Mallorca was built in 1762 for the Monastery of Santo Domingo in Palma when he was just 26 years old. It was moved to Mallorca in 1837. There are two divided manuals with 40 ranks of pipes.
Although the Tiento doesn’t specifically call for registration changes, I will change 3 times to demonstrate some of the wealth of unique registrations that the divided manual provides. Listen especially for the loud mixture at the end. It is the largest existing mixture in the world with 25 ranks and 1,104 pipes for one stop!
