Twenty minutes after we started the hike on Mount Prevost on Vancouver Island (in southern British Columbia, Canada), we ran into a family of Black Bears. They started climbing a tree after I left my camera for a few minutes on a log and saw it roaming in the grasslands below the forest. As we were afraid of when the bear would come back down and we didn't want to run into the family of bears again on the way back down from he summit, we decided to cancel the hike an, turn around, and decided to come back and summit the mountain another day. It is really quite rare and unusual to encounter a bear on Mount Prevost, as this is a popular area with a relatively large population and urban area of Duncan nearby, which is about a 2 hour drive north of Victoria and a 2 hour drive south of Nanaimo. The most terrifying and awesome part of this close encounter with a Black Bear (there are no Grizzly Bears on Vancouver Island) was that it made deep growling, hissing, and almost roaring noises as it was on the tree. This was truly fascinating to witness as you could tell the bear was scared, feeling protective and unsure of what to do about the protection of her cubs; a threatened bear with her babies is one of the most scary possibilities of things to run into while on a hike.
