(If you hang in to the 3:15 mark on this video, you will get an intermodal surprise!)
So I was driving along the east bank of the Hudson river between Cold Spring and Bear Mountain and decided on a whim to check out tiny Manitou, a flag stop on the Metro North/Amtrak former NYC main. I remembered seeing this place from the train before and was struck by how isolated and tiny a place it was. It is one of the few places where the river is accessable orient these parts, and the road dead-ends at the RR crossing in a swamp, with about a half dozen houses along the river. And yet it rates a station stop (flag stop- only weekend service). There's a beautiful view of the Bear Mountain bridge across the swamp. Besides the RR crossing, there is a control point with double crossovers, and on this day, one of the main tracks was out of service, so the northbound Amtrak Ethan Allen had to wait about 20 minutes for a Metro North southbound. The passing of the Lake Shore Ltd. surprised me, but there was even a bigger surprise in store for me when I set up my camera with the big lens pointed upriver around a bend to catch the Lake Shore again....
